Program by Richard Derocher
Text by Fender Tucker
If you've ever collected a bunch of hi-res or multi-color graphics and
put them on 1541 disks, probably the first thing you said to yourself was,
"Gee, these disks sure don't hold many files." At 40 blocks a file for OCP
or KOALA pictures, you can only get 16 pictures on one side of a 1541 disk.
Even on a 1571 disk you can only get 32 pictures.
So most archivers use larger media, like the 1581 disks, or hard
drives. But there's another way, and it's what LOADSTAR has been doing for
pretty much all its life -- packing pictures.
There aren't any good packers for the 128 mode (that I know of) but
thanks to Richard Derocher we now have a way of showing packed pictures in
the 128 mode in an easy-to-use slide show. It supports only one kind of
file, the LOADSTAR ".shp" format, which can be much smaller than 40 blocks,
yet still produce the exact same picture as a full-sized OCP or KOALA
file.
How do you pack pictures into the ".shp" format? By using a 64-mode
program called "STB PRINT". It's on this issue. Once you have a bunch of
".shp" files, SLIDE SHOW 128 allows you to view them easily.
NOTE: Should you ever want to convert the ".shp" files back into their
original format (for editing, perhaps), STB PRINT will do that, too.
THE SLIDE SHOW PROGRAM
----------------------
The program runs in the 40-column mode only. At the Main Menu you can
change drives, see the directory of the current drive, send a disk command,
and make a slide show. You can also quit to LOADSTAR 128 if there's a LS
128 disk in the current drive.
Put a disk with a bunch of ".shp" files in the current drive and select
Make a Slide Show. There are two ".shp" files by master artist Walt Harned
on Side One and two more on Side Two of this issue. These are brand new and
have never been published before.
The directory of the disk is read and if you are using JiffyDOS and a
CMD drive only the ".shp" files are shown in a file requestor. On non-CMD
drives all of the files on a disk are shown. Use the CRSR UP/DOWN keys to
scroll through the files if there are more than will fill the window.
Select as many as you want with RETURN and they'll be marked. You can
select them all by pressing A, or you can have the disk read again by
pressing D. Do this if you change disks.
When done selecting the pics to see, press F1. Then you have two
options. If you want to have the slide show continue when you press a key,
select that option. If you want each picture shown for a certain number of
seconds, select that option. Use CRSR UP/DOWN to change the number of
seconds.
You can also choose whether the slide show will run continuously, or
only once. If it's run continuously, the only way out of the show is to
press ESC while the show is running. If you choose only once, the show will
go back to the Main Menu when all of the selected pics have shown once
each.
LAST WORDS
----------
Check out the beautiful pics by Walt on this issue, then notice how
small the files are. Use STB PRINT to pack all of your collected OCP,
KOALA, Doodle, and RunPaint pics into ".shp" files and you will be able to
see a whole bunch of them (up to 298) at a time with SLIDE SHOW 128.
